A Woman Posing For A Picture

Breast Augmentation for Beach Season & Beyond

For years running, breast augmentation surgery has been among the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. In 2018 alone, of the 17.7 million cosmetic procedures performed, well over 300,000 were breast augmentations, making it the #1 elective procedure in the nation.

As the procedure continues to rise in popularity, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: American women believe that their confidence in, and appreciation for, their breasts is closely related to their identity as women.

But of course, not every woman desires larger breasts. Some women simply hope to reverse the effects of pregnancy or aging. And for those women who suffered from breast cancer and were forced to choose between their breasts and their life, breast augmentation offers a way to restore their sense of femininity.

It’s nearly impossible to answer every question or address every myth concerning breast augmentation. But for those of us considering the procedure sometime in the near future, one obvious question arises: when will I be able to bask in the results? If I have a beach trip planned for late summer, will that give me enough time to recover?

The Consultation

Successful breast augmentation procedures rely on setting realistic goals and having clear results in mind. We would not, after all, start building a home before every detail was sorted out. The same is true of a procedure that can drastically change your life.

During your consultation, your surgeon will perform an examination and ask you about your desired results. Depending on the size of your natural breasts, your surgeon will outline practical goals for increasing size, shape, or height while maintaining the most natural looking results.

Before your consultation, it’s important that you research what your ideal breasts might look like. Find and compile images that demonstrate your best possible results and present these images to your surgeon to give them a better idea of your dreams. Once your surgeon understands your needs, they’ll work with you to design the procedure for maximum effect. Everyone involved should have the utmost confidence in your singular vision.

Overall, it’s a careful process that shouldn’t be rushed. But chances are good that if you’ve been thinking about breast augmentation for some time, you already have a clear image in your head. Now, it’s just about conveying that image to your surgeon.

Average time between consultation and surgery date: 6 weeks

The Recovery Process

Depending on the particulars of your breast augmentation procedure, you can allot somewhere between one and two hours for the surgery itself. Breast augmentation is typically performed under general anesthesia, which, for some, may require more than one afternoon to fully overcome.

During the first week of recovery, you can expect some mild discomfort or bouts of increased pain. You can mitigate discomfort with prescription and over-the-counter medicine so long as your surgeon allows. You’ll also want to avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous activity. This ensures the quality of your augmentation and assists the body in healing fully before getting back to normal activity.

It’s especially important that you not lift your arms above your head. Your implants will need time to settle into place, and any serious movement could disrupt the process. After 3-4 weeks following the surgery, any bruising, pain, and discomfort should begin to subside. Your surgeon will help you determine when light activity is acceptable.

Finally, by the sixth week of recovery, you should be ready to hit the beach! In roughly a month and a half, you’ve given yourself a new sense of confidence and a new look.

Total Average Recovery Time: 6 weeks
