Heal Better After Liposuction – A Guide to Aftercare

As one year comes to a close and another year opens, we’re asked to take stock of our time, our happiness, our habits, and our bodies. Fitness is top-of-mind for Americans this time each year. But sadly, the promises we make to ourselves can sometimes be the easiest to break.

A study of resolutions made for 2019 reveals that 59% of us vowed to exercise more while 54% of us pledged to eat better. Nearly half of us (48%) declared that we would lose weight the following year.

But as most of us know all too well, the best laid plans of mice and men have a way of fizzling out. The reality of achieving our weight loss, fitness, and body goals can be startling. That may explain why after those resolutions were made in 2019, 265K people still opted for liposuction surgery.

Maximizing Liposuction Results & Fulfilling Promises

Modern liposuction is safer, more effective, and more popular than ever before. For removing unwanted body fat and sculpting your body shape, liposuction still reigns supreme. But without proper aftercare, your results may not be as powerful as you’d hoped.

At Pinnacle Plastic Surgery in Beaufort, SC, we’ve helped thousands of patients achieve their dreams. These are the liposuction aftercare steps we recommend to ensure your results and encourage a rapid recovery.

Liposuction Surgery Aftercare – A Pinnacle Plastic Guide

Typically, liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure. But those of us who undergo liposuction still have considerations and steps to make and take if we want to enjoy our results ASAP.

All told, most of the bruising and swelling you experience after the procedure should subside within 6 weeks. But depending on how well you follow these aftercare steps, you could be in for a longer recovery.

Hydrate

Shocking as it is to learn, your blood is 90% water. Naturally, when we’re dehydrated, our blood thickens, making it more difficult to pump. After surgery especially, you need oxygen and nutrients carried by your bloodstream in order to heal quickly. Drinking plenty of water is key to a fast recovery and excellent liposuction results.

If you struggle to drink the water you need, plenty of reasonable alternatives exist. Tea, coconut water, sports drinks, and fruit juice can keep you hydrated so long as you’re mindful of sugar content.

Rest

Sleep and ease are two key components of liposuction aftercare. For adults who aren’t used to long periods of rest, recovering from a surgery can be aggravating. But despite how fidgety you may feel, sitting down and taking it easy aren’t optional.

No matter how safe and effective surgery can be, it’s still traumatic to your body. By getting plenty of sleep and resisting the urge to lift moderately heavy objects, you’re limiting complications and allowing your body to heal without hurdles.

Walk

Obviously, weight training is off the table while recovering from liposuction. Morning jogs, bike rides, and kayaking are similarly discouraged. But even modest exercise oxygenates the blood and reduces inflammation, boosting your immune system when you need it most.

For the benefits of exercise without the risks, consider taking a short walk in the weeks following your procedure. Stay aware of your limits and try to keep your trip short.

Eat

Proper nutrition is important before and after any surgery—even liposuction. Nutritious, balanced meals can supply your body with the vitamins and minerals it needs to repair. Leafy greens, nuts, fish, and fruit help you feel full while powering your recovery.

With that said, food that was bad for you before the surgery remains bad for you afterwards. Try to avoid salty, fried, greasy, or over-sugary foods if you can.
